The Small Opera of San Diego is sponsored by the nonprofit Lazarideus Foundation. It was founded with the purpose of promoting singers in San Diego County and has the following goals:
- Create opera workshops where promising opera singers can improve their skills
- Provide performing opportunities in shows, demonstrations, and recitals in the schools
- Provide singers exposure to opera specialists, such as impresarios, managers, agents, and opera directors
- Attract sponsors for singers, recitals, and small opera productions
- Bring more opera to San Diego County through:
- Beautiful shows with the widest repertoire of the operas: solos, duets, and scenes
- Promoting opera to the general public throughout the year, not just during opera season
- Making opera accessible and affordable for the masses
- Encouraging composers by staging their original operas
